The Digital Divide and its Impact on Today’s Businesses and Employees
Presented by Dr. Kimberly K. Estep, Chancellor, WGU Tennessee

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light a clear divide between communities that have access to low-cost, fast, effective Internet connectivity and communities that do not. The sudden adjustment of schools, businesses and social services to remote learning, working-from-home and delivering services at a distance has made closing the digital divide a major policy issue and a national priority. In this session, we will discover the historical roots of this inequity, its ongoing impact on the economy of our state and nation, and steps being taken to address the problem.

Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the history and circumstances that created the Digital Divide in the United States
  • Participants will learn about specific impacts the digital divide has on the development of a qualified workforce and on professional development of employees
  • Participants will learn about specific actions businesses, schools and community leaders can take to close the digital divide and jumpstart economic growth in underserved areas
